what is governance?
CARE believes that poverty is created and maintained through the operation of unequal power relations and structures and the resulting unequal distribution of resources and opportunities. Governance work aims to address these challenges and is at the heart of sustainable and equitable development.
Governance is the exercise of power in the management of public affairs
. It is a dynamic, political process through which decisions are made, conflicts are resolved and diverse interests are negotiated. The process can draw its authority from formal written rules, as well as from informal processes such as unwritten cultural norms.
Participation and Practice in Rights (PPR) Project's
short Youtube Video on "Making Economic and Social Change" explains governance concepts beautifully:
What is Good Governance?
effective, participatory, transparent, equitable and accountable management of public affairs guided by agreed procedures and principles, to achieve the goals of sustainable poverty reduction and social justice
